Mephitis a blanket the baby was wrapped in at the hospital, before meeting the baby.
There are also the new noises to consider. "Children crying sounds a lot like animals crying, and it can in fact upset some pets. You want them to get used to that sound," suggests Dr. Kuhn. She says you can get seal recordings of babies crying to desensitize your dog to that sound.
If you're big on walking your dog, cook up for an adjustment when you introduce a baby stroller into your walking routine.
"Strollers are a hardly large and a little upsetting to some dogs," says Dr. Kuhn. She suggests you create practicing before the baby comes. Let the person who normally walks the dog hold the leash while someone else pushes the stroller. That will remedy get the dog used to the stroller, and eventually, the dog walker can also push the stroller. Dr. Kuhn is fastidious to point out to never attach the leash to the stroller in case the dog takes off shortly or unexpectedly.
When it comes to bringing the baby home, Dr. Kuhn suggests, in a two-materfamilias household, the mother enter first to greet the dog, while the father comes in following with the baby. The mother should greet the dog since it's likely been the longest since the dog has seen her. After everyone is inside, the mom should say hello to the dog, then lead it to the father and the baby sitting on the couch. Let the dog smell the baby, but if it shows any signs of encroachment, lead the animal away.
