I separate birthdays and death days are the hardest for some folks, who have lost loved ones, but to me, those days aren’t not quite as wrenching as the little moments you realize they are not here, and those happen just about every free day.

On the day it (kind of) snowed, I missed getting the phone call to tell me how treacherous the driving conditions would be, and how it would all things considered just be better if I didn’t leave the house for a week or two.

“But Matriarch, it’s barely snowing down here. It’s not even sticking,” I would say.

“I be informed, but Ashley,” she would say quite dramatically, “it’s flourishing to freeze a little later on, and there will be ice on the roads, and that’s much, much worse than snow. Besides I heard (from someone who heard from someone who heard from some semi-suffer authority) you guys may actually get more like 20 feet if that turmoil just moves down a little bit and stalls out. So I think it would just be healthier if you stay put.”
